The Hockey Helmet is your Most Important Piece of Protective Gear for your Child when Skating on the Hockey Rink

The hockey helmet will generally last 2-3 years (growing room wise) for kids and pretty much as long as you would like to keep it for adult players. Understand that size is the most important thing. For a proper fit, make sure all straps are fastened so that the chin cup fits snugly against the chin and the mask achieves a snug fit. Your skating helmet should fit your head snugly and not move around too much, but it shouldn't feel tight. Your helmet can be adjusted by the screws in its sides to better fit your child's head. This is nice if you have a growing child, because you won't have to buy a new helmet every season. Another important part of the helmet is the chin strap. The chin strap is essential to prevent concussion from a fall. It is recommended that the Player wear CSA and HECC certified helmets. All CSA and HECC certified helmets have a sticker indicating their approval. Quality helmets have designations from appropriate safety testing organizations. I recommend purchasing a new helmet and visor because a used one could be damaged with very fine cracks that you cannot see and it is not worth taking a chance getting an injury to your head or face.

Note that the biggest difference in helmets is the type of facemask you get. Plastic masks, similar to Plexiglas, don't block your vision. Most pro players will wear a plastic mask if they wear one at all. Vision is rarely a problem with wire masks, but sometimes the bars will get in the way. Try it on and make sure that none of the horizontal bars blocks your child's vision. Plastic masks can fog up when you're breathing hard. You can buy a special treatment to prevent this.

Lastly, a mouth guard is essential to prevent concussion and safety of your child's teeth. You can get ones that can attach to the ice hockey helmet. I recommend ones that are customized to your child's teeth. There are organizations that will take an orthodontic mould of your child's teeth so the mouth guard will fit the teeth snugly so the mouthguard will not pop out and your child will not be able to bite on loose straggly pieces. They usually offer decals on them and various colors. It is a bit more costly but the more comfortable and protected your child is, the better game of hockey he/she will be able to play.
