The height of the stick is best-suited half way between the chin and their nose measured when the child is wearing their hockey skates. As a rule of thumb, a shorter stick allows an offensive player more control of the puck, and a longer stick enables a defensive player to reach out and check more easily. If the toe of the stick blade rides up off the ice this is an indication that the stick is too long. There are basically three types of sticks, wood, graphite or a composite of wood and fiberglass. Start with a wooden stick if your child is a beginner. Wood is much less expensive and it will give your child a chance to experiment before you get a more permanent shaft.
Understand that all of the sticks' shafts will have different amounts of "give" to them and that every player will have a different opinion about how much flex is just right. Generally, younger players need more flex, and older, stronger players need less.
Know your correct "lie," which is the angle of the blade to the stick. When your child is in the ready position, there shouldn't be a gap between the ice and the blade. Generally you use a basic straight lie until you determine which direction your child shoots. Once you find the right stick model and lie keep buying it as no 2 different stick manufacturers models are exactly alike in lie, curve, balance and stiffness.
Once you have chosen the ideal stick for your child, remember to tape up the top thicker than normal so your child can pick up the stick easily with their hockey gloves. Properly taping a stick is one of the old rituals of the game. If you want to be taken seriously at the rink, you'd better know how to do it right. Follow these steps and your stick will be faultless.
Instructions
STEP 1: Remove any old tape. Apply a strip of black cloth tape along the bottom edge of the blade and then fold the excess up each side of the blade.
STEP 2: Wrap tape around the blade, beginning at the end. After the first wrap, run the tape at a slight angle to create an overlap of about 1/4 inch (6 mm).
STEP 3: Keep the tape flat across the inside of the curved blade. Press the tape as flat as possible across the outside of the blade.
STEP 4: Continue wrapping until the blade begins to angle into the handle.
STEP 5: Wrap tape around the handle, beginning about 6 inches (15 cm) below the top and continuing up to the top.
STEP 6: Build up a knob of tape at the end about 1/4 inch (6 mm) thick to keep your hand from slipping off.
