March 18, 2007 By: Frances Lazzaro Ewaniuk Reverse CurlsStand holding a straight bar at your thighs with a pronated (palms-down) grip, your hands spaced about shoulder-width apart. Wrap your thumbs around the bar for safety.Keep your chest up and eyes forward, and bend your knees slightly.
TIPS If you aren't accustomed to using the straight bar, use lighter weights at first. Make sure you warm up sufficiently before attempting to lift heavier weight.Avoid using momentum to help you get through the lift; have a spotter help you through the sticking points. Using momentum causes you to lean back, shifting the muscular emphasis away from the working muscles, and could cause back injury. Keeping a slight bend in your knees takes pressure off the lower back. Widen your stance to shoulder width for additional balance. Keep your elbows back throughout the movement. Allowing your elbows to move forward reduces the stress on your targeted muscles, involves your front deltoids to a greater extent and lessens the overall effectiveness of the exercise. Using a barbell lets you more effectively maintain a pronated grip throughout the exercise. The slight supination allowed when using an EZ-bar or dumbbells decreases the emphasis on the brachialis in this exercise, but you should include other supinated- and neutral-grip exercises at other points in your workout. Keep your hands in line with your forearms throughout the exercise and lock your wrists in place, extended back slightly. Don't allow your wrists to flex forward during the set.
