When your child decides to play hockey, the one most important thing about playing the game is skating. This makes all the difference in your child's ability to play hockey and have fun while playing hockey.
Most adults forget the first time they put on a pair of skates. These ice skates allow you to glide and feel like you are flying. This is what is memorable about skating.
The fit of a skate is crucial to your child’s performance. COMFORT, COMFORT, COMFORT!!! When the fit is comfort and you sense a smile from your child then the sharpening of your child’s skate is next.
Make sure you get your child’s hockey skates sharpened by a person who cares about the blade. I could not figure out why my son started to cry while skating and was falling down. When we took off his skates I discovered his blades were uneven. The last fellow who sharpened his skates cut the blade diagonally so he was uneven when skating. No wonder he was having so much difficulty. We later found a person at a local skate shop that fixed the blades and now we take the hockey skates to him after every 6-7 hours of skating. That made a huge difference as my son is now considered one of the best skaters in his hockey league. Do you think it is only because of the comfort and the sharpening of the blades? Well - it was a start as he stopped crying and continually smiled on the ice that allowed him to have fun and skate longer.
The difference between children's levels of skating in the beginning is primarily ice time. The longer your child spends on the ice and watches other people ice skate, the better they become. It truly is that simple. However, I did invest in power skating lessons. But your child also needs some extra time to practice what they learned and feel comfortable in their skates. Actually trusting their skates to do what they want. Trust the edges of their skates. This is what allows them to feel like they are flying. You want their ice skates to feel like shoes. The best way to do this is allowing the kids to play tag and make everything a game. Kids love to imagine flying and when they can stop, glide, fall down, and snow each other it is like another world to them. The faster they skate, the more confident they become. Now when they are playing on the ice – and then go into a skating lesson they grasp it easier because they feel comfort on the ice. There are so many technical dynamics to skating however the most important are the right fit, the right sharpened blade and the right amount of fun on the ice which inherently comes with more time on the ice. The more time they spend on the ice the more fancy tricks they will want to explore and expend.
AS QUOTED FROM THE MOVIE, "MIGHTY DUCKS"
Kids really love to play by flowing on the ice It is not about winning It is about showing them how to play~showing them to have FUN! And most of all TEACHING THEM TO FLY!!!!
This is what your kids will remember – there is no better feeling than stepping onto the ice and gliding to your heart's content. It truly is the closest thing to freedom that a small child can access easily. And this is why people continue skate into their elderly years.
